St Maarten was the first stop on a cruise we just returned from. Holland America Line, "Rotterdam", a fine ship, formerly the flagship of the line, I believe and recently refurbished after 20 years service. Much as we enjoyed the facilities and food and service on board, HAL charges an arm and a leg for all extras, including bottled water in the cabins at $ 3.95 each. This explains the fact one of our fellow passengers boarding in Ft Lauderdale was hauling a crate of bottled water ! Consequently, our main priority on this stop was to buy water and access internet. Holland House is a charming hotel right on the waterfront a short walk from the port where we enjoyed a good cup of coffee and their free WiFi. Should I ever return to Philipsburg I would certainly stay there.
They charge you 25 dollars for an umbrella, 2 chairs and 4 drinks. ( you can choose only between juices,250ml beer, water or soda). BUT you have to pick up yourself. There is no service on the beach unless you order food. You choose and pay on counter and they will deliver for you. The only girl available to serve was not always there. When moved inside as was about to rain, was trying to pay for another drink but NONE of the waiters even looked at me when i was trying to waive. not even when i started looking at the menu, they asked if i need any help. they offer shower and bathroom with the beach service, but there is no shower and i had to clean my 3 year old kid washing my hands in the sink and just wiping him. As they have thousands of tourists everyday, they just don't care about serving well at all!
Ideally located on the promenade overlooking the beach/bay. Great food and nicely decorated. Premium and designer shops to the rear. Nice polite staff and overall a nice atmosphere. Clean throughout and no complaints at all
It was disappointing to reserve a deluxe ocean view room with a request for a high floor room to check in and be assigned to the 2nd floor with the majority of the view consisting of looking at the side of an adjoining building and a palm tree. I'm glad I only stayed in Philipsburg a couple of nights. It's mainly a part of the island catering to the hundreds of people getting off of the cruise ships, and the shopping on Front Street didn't seem that great to me, just a bunch of the typical tourist type stuff that you can buy anywhere similar. It's also very quiet and night and most businesses close early, so there are very limited options nearby to buy food or pop at night unless you go to a nearby bar. I am normally not afraid walking around most places, but didn't feel comfortable walking in Philipsburg. The room was very spacious and clean, and the balcony was very nice. There is also a large safe in the room so you can put your laptops and other similar sized equipment in there. One inconvenience in the room was that the outlets were near the floor behind the work station so you had to get on the floor to plug anything in. If I can give anyone some very good advice, it's that you should not rent a car from the airport to drive to this hotel. It took me nearly 2 hours driving around Philipsburg just to finally get to the Holland House (Front Street is closed to cars until 6:00 p.m.). Once you get, there is no parking permitted in front of the hotel and your car can be towed. There is very limited and spotty valet service available, and their parking lot is located on another street. If you are going to stay in this area, make your life easier by only renting a car during the day from a nearby car rental (the hotel can help you reserve). The restaurant has delicious food and it's wonderful sitting there enjoying your meals while people watching and looking at the ocean.
Holland House is a nice hotel located right on a beach in Dutch part of St. Maarten. I made sure to have my confirmation handy while checking in. I had read other reviews of folks having problems of wrong rooms or NO rooms. Sure enough, the desk clerk assigned us to a street side room when we had reserved a King water view room. When I mentioned the mistake, I was told I was the one mistaken. That was their story till I showed them my confirmation! Then I was informed there weren't any beachfront rooms available. We would have to take a street room. I had heard those rooms could be noisy. When I made it clear I wasn't satisfied the Mgr. came out and said she had already planned on giving us a $50 voucher for dinner. Knowing how expensive their menu is I suggested $100 voucher would be better. We got it. I thanked the Mgr. but told her I was still going to write a review of their "room switching" policy. Other guests were waiting to check in at that point.....and the Mgr. then informed us she was NOT charging us for the 2nd night. Cool. I'm now fairly happy. It actually turned out better for us being on the street side. Since there weren't any ships in port, Phillipsburg was like a ghost town-very quiet. The beach front rooms however have to listen to loud music from the dining and bar area all day and into the night!!!..Street side could be very noisy, however, if several ships are in port. Take your chances. The food in the dining room is wonderful!!! Staff is very friendly and helpful. Beach service is terrific Be aware that if you're assigned a 4th floor room you might have to "walk" your luggage from the 3rd to the 4th floor.
