Beautiful beach...but had better expectations from hotel

We just recently returned from our very 1st time to St Maarten. We were there April19th-24. While we still managed to have an amazing time with good friends our trip did NOT start out so good. We are very seasoned travelers, and have been all over to numerous all inclusive properties, but this was our first time here in sxm, as well as any Sonesta property. #1..I would NOT use delta vacations to book a vacation, we used them for the first time as well, and I was not impressed for their lack of timely responses/attempting to correct problems. Our airport transfer was included, thru SST transfers, we had to wait almost over an hour for our bus after landing, granted there was traffic, and apparently learning after being on the island all week, the traffic can be crazy causing delays, they definitely could have been managed/organized better on pickup of customers based on flight schedules... so we finally get there to hotel, walk in..it is an older property, which we knew, but were greeted with cool towels and champagne... very friendly staff so far... As checkin continues.. Vicky (front desk checkin lady) informed me, it looks like even though you had booked a oceanview beachfront cabana room, we dont have any available, and wont have one until friday(2 days into our vacation) ...keep in mind when i booked this trip months ago, in January... i had to call to book due to limited availability of these room types, however after a very frustrating wait and see calling delta vacations and the actual hotel itself several times, waiting on email, paying more for a cabana room, i was assured and confirmed i had a cabana room....so when i arrived at check-in to be told i didnt have one. And couldnt get in one until 2 days later??? We were extremely irritated.... the hotel was maxed out for sure, as was apparent by the amount of people at the pool and at resturants( 2 of which you DO have to have reservations, and need to be there by 10 am to make or you cant get a seat) ... however what made the whole situation worse, we werent offered any sort of apology or I am so sorry that happened..let us to do this or this offer this as an upgrade, or complimentary whatever, to make up for it, we were put in a 2nd floor ocean view serenity room with 2 beds??? We were here celebrating our 10 yr wedding anniversary, so 2 tiny beds not exactly ideal, the view was of the back side of the maintenance area of pool, you could sorta see beach and pool, but definitely didnt have a cabana or just walk out like i had planned with a 1st floor cabanas room... our room was def very dated, our friends did get their cabana room, and it was def updated with new paint colors , bedding ,bathroom shower was way nicer than ours..just was nicer for sure. Food was fairly good, its an allinclusive resort keep that in mind, its not a 5 star restaurant, they r cooking for hundreds of people, several meals a day, so have realistic expectations of what you will be offered, that being said, i thought it was really good, breakfast got a bit repetitive, but we managed to eat at every resturant and was pretty good! Plan a 2 hr ordeal for upstairs in pescatore, its lengthy but we were with friends a group of 6. So that also probably played a role... the atomsphere is very laid back, but it def attracts an older crowd... we are in our 30s and still had fun karaoke nite, but the other nites their entertainment was not so great :/ ... they need to focus on younger groups as well, better djs with better music/activites etc... Kevin at the pool level/buffett bar.. did great on our drinks, he even did come sing some karaoke with me!! Lol ..our Favorite staff by far Lisa..a manager of some sort with Blonde hair from the Netherlands, she was so much fun and has a great personality and interacting with guests, if it hadnt been our last nite, we might have gone to wet fest at carnival!! As well as Elijah, he was our waitor at lava rock resturant... and he took amazing care of us! He was a great waitor and has an awesome smile!!! The beach is GOREGOUS!!!! Water was a smidge chilly, but with hot sun was perfect, town just a short 10 min walk.. lots of shopping bars etc, one thing i didnt like..trash on the beach, we did see broken glass time to time , which really surprised me, so pay attention to that when walking up and down beach...i did receive a email from the hotel the day after we checked in front front desk manager, asking how everything was and for any problems please reply to her..so i did expressing my frustration and still have NEVER heard back, delta vacations finally responded via facebook message and email, offered some vouchers which is great, but didnt didnt do anything for us right then, we were very unhappy for the lack of customer service, but the location, pretty good food, and just enjoying the fact we were on vacation and relaxing with friends, helped us have a great anniversary trip!! Not sure we will return to this resort, but will def be back to the island!!

great return visit to this wonderful resort

Just returned from 2 week stay at this hotel. Nice to see some upgrades from last year .As before food quantity and quality was excellent, all staff very friendly and helpful. Addition of more beach loungers and umbrellas was appreciated ,but still need to be up early to get prime spots. Only negative was large number of guests from Maho Beach hotel making daily use of our hotels facilities. Basically they're getting benefit of an upscale resort for lower cost than we pay. Some even try and bring children to the resort and they also cause shortage of lounger/umbrellas and line ups at meal times. I know it is a corporate policy to treat the 2 hotels as "sisters", but the reality is they are not equal., Great Bay is superior in all respects, and the sister hotels policy weakens the brand of Great Bay, which is marketed as an upscale adults only resort.

Good Luck

3 couples who stayed from April 15 - 22. Tips for future guests: - One of the couples we traveled with spent the extra $$ for a walk-out, ocean side room. Rained hard one day and their room flooded. They had to show the "staff" how to get rid of the water by using the drain in the bathroom. They were "credited" $150.00 for their efforts. Seriously! Water came in through an outside door that had a 1" space under it. - Avoid the second floor rooms at all cost. They are a little "rough" as the disinterested front desk attendant told my wife and I. - Restaurants had a tough time dealing with the fact we had 3 couples in our party and it took forever to be seated and served. Avoid eating at 8:30 as only half of the menu will still be available. - Restaurant and bars are understaffed. We always tip and that proved to be worthless. - All of the above comments are not exaggerated one bit. Sorry! - On a positive note, the beach and ocean were beautiful.

great trip

We stayed for a week from APRIL 13 TO 20. At first I thought the resort looked very tired and probably should be a three star resort, but after meeting the staff, and eating the food, and seeing the view of the beach,I would now rate it a 4 star hotel,The whole staff was so great.I would go back.

We found this resort to be rather boring and too quiet. Seems to cater to 50 plus crowd. Buffet was repetative and the buffet desserts ....umm lol! Read the reviews for common themes as they are bang on. If you are okay with a quiet resort with a great beach that has a older crowd then you will have a good time. Personally, I wouldnt go back but that is because I prefer the bigger resorts with bigger pools.
