Ratings & Reviews
Let me start off by saying St. Maarten is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. From last year till now I've been to Cancun, Mexico (July 2016)- Montego Bay, Jamaica (Jan 2017) and St. Maarten (May 2017). I had the best time in St. Maarten. I was so sad to see the destruction that Hurricane Irma caused this wonderful Island. It was heartbreaking to see the photos of the damage and especially to the Sonesta Maho Beach resort where I stayed for 4 nights. On a more positive note lets talk about the resort and the great experience I had. The resort is literally a 5-minute drive from the airport. I traveled with my girlfriend, & we were greeted with champagne upon check-in at the front desk. The staff was very friendly. Our room wasn't ready when we got there, (took a few hours) so we left our bags with the busboy and went to explore the resort. We walked out the doors to the pool area. Absolutely beautiful. The layout was perfect. To the left of the pool was a dining area for lunch as well as the beach. I was immediately awestruck when I saw the beach and how easily accessible it was from the resort. The color of the water was a pristine turquoise. There was an elevated beach section with chairs specifically for Sonesta guests. There are concrete stairs that take you to the main beach. The beach is in no way "huge", there are many rocks as you walk down, but I found it to be perfect. It was just the right amount of space. The sandy shore curves across the resort and the neighboring resort and leads to the iconic beach area where the planes land super close to the beach on the runway of the airport. All that separates the runway from the beach is a gate & a road. Our rooms were perfect, nice decor, nice bed/bathroom. We had a nice balcony, a decent view of the pool to our right side. One complaint was the MOSQUITOES! They ate us alive during our stay. We should've bought repellent and I would advise you to do the same. We didn't spend much time on the balcony or had that door open due to the mosquitoes. One of the best features of this resort, in my opinion, are the planes. Wow I mean, seeing planes flying so close & landing daily while you're eating, or chilling on the beach, or enjoying the water, is an experience unlike any other. It wasn't annoying at all, for me it never got old. They typically come in most often during the afternoon hours, some a couple mins after the other, others, 30-45 mins after. Standing on the beach as planes take off is pretty cool to experience as well. I wouldn't recommend holding on to the gate which can be fatal (danger signs there too) but if you stand on the beach you can feel the air pressure/jet blast, the bigger the plane the stronger the blast. Hold on to your sunglasses and hats! The planes landing/taking off is definitely a spectacle to see/experience. During the evening/night time, there's barely any planes coming in. Loved it Another cool feature is the fact you have access to the sister resort Sonesta Great Bay. We visited there and to be honest, I liked Maho Beach's resort wayyyy better. The beach at great bay was nice & had a nice view, but the sand was very coarse, which I did not like. And it was also a much older crowd as well (since it was adults only), I also found it to be a quieter setting. It was nice to experience the different setting & food variety there though. I mean if you're older & looking for a peace and quiet vacation you may like Great Bay. But I'd stay at Maho Beach over Great bay any day. I'm 24 going on 25 so I prefer the more lively, action setting. Back to Sonesta Maho beach. Food on the resort was pretty good, wasn't amazing but it was good. Dinner was great. Great selection of restaurants for dinner as well. I def recommend the Lava rock dinner at palms grill (requires reservation), cool experience. Lunch was good, pretty much the same every day, your salads, burgers, fries, wings, nachos, and random other stuff. Breakfast was pretty good as well. Nice selection of different stuff at the buffet. Eating breakfast every morning with the view of the beach/water was just so amazing. The bartenders were awesome! So friendly and joyous. Loved getting drinks from the bar especially the one by palms grill (as you walk to beach). Each day there was a special drink they advertised. They were definitely generous with the alcohol. (Try tip them at least occasionally, they deserve it) All inclusive is the way to go when you're in the Caribbean. Having access to all the food and drinks included in the price of your stay is unbeatable. Now let's talk about the area the resort is located. As I mentioned before, super close to the airport. There's a casino and nightclub right across the street which made for cool nightly entertainment. Mullet Bay Beach, (The best beach I have been to so far) is a 10 minute or less walk from the resort. Sooo amazing! They charge for beach chairs I think $5 or $10 but well worth it. Overall I had a fantastic experience in St. Maarten & the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort. The highlight of the trip was the excursion we did, (which we booked through the hotel). I believe it was called "The Caribbean Hidden Secrets". Travelled on a speedboat to 3 diff islands, got to sightsee, snorkel, swim with sea turtles, go to Pinel island, feed iguanas, etc. Highly recommend it!! It was a blast. I can't wait to go back to St. Maarten. I fell in love with the island. Weather was amazing during our stay. I would love to have a vacation home there one day. I pray the island and its friendly people make a speedy recovery post-Hurricane Irma.
Best place to stay with family and friends! I've been here three times, Oct 2016 being the most recent. We had a such a good time here as my best friend and her large family stayed there for a birthday celebration. I was so happy to see the new kids club which her children enjoyed. The food and ambiance at Ocean Terrace and Palms Grill made it perfect for large families and friends to enjoy. The kids were safe while the adults relaxed on Maho Beach! The staff here are all so attentive and caring. Too many to list but a special shoutout to Cheryl who always greeted us a big beautiful smile. We also enjoyed the nearby restaurants in Maho Village just steps away from the resort. The rooms were large and spacious and always clean. Truly a best place for families and a milestone celebration that I will always treasure.
I arrived at the Sonesta Hotel in St Maarten the afternoon prior to hurricane Irma destroying the island,.. everything looked fantastic when I arrived but of course everyone was battening down. After dinner all hotel guests (300 approx) were herded into the auditorium for a few hours, then as the hurricane was almost upon us we were moved again into another room, needless to say it was a horrific night lasting approx 12 hrs or more initially, the ceilings were being blasted in, water was filling the room, the building itself even swayed, people were screaming and crying. Next morning we ventured out and everything was destroyed, as has been publicised and written about in the media. After the next 5 days without power or running water, we were evacuated, the staff did all they could under trying circumstances to feed guests, keep amenities sanitized and try and make us comfortable, all the while knowing their very own homes had been destroyed. I want to make special mention of Shep of course, who took on the role of steering us out of such a nightmare, and beautiful Laura, always had a smile and upbeat, also, the little lady who constantly maintained the cleanliness of the restrooms, I never did get her name, the chef and cooks and all the staff rose to the occasion and were magnificent. The fact that we not only survived the night, but also the next 5 days, I can confidently state that without the staff, some people would've lost their lives.
This is my second stay at the Sonesta Maho Beach resort hotel in Sint Maarten. The entire front desk staff at the Sonesta Maho resort was very nice and accommodating. Everyone from the catering and cleaning staff was also very helpful. We enjoyed the all inclusive dining options. Alick was very polite and helpful to us as we saw him upon returning from the beach. I was able to rest. I have so many more names of the staff that I would like to thank for their hospitality. Praying for their safety and recovery from the storms.
We always had a great experience here, everyone is so nice and if there was any trouble staff was quick to take care of it. The last time we were there, 2016 December it was under new management. It was our worst trip, we were made to feel like the place had become about serving the wealthy. And the staff wasn't as nice. The 1 good thing that was always good was our bartender, Ramon ! Always friendly, always remembered us and a terrific bartender! I don't know what's going to happen now that the hurricane destroyed everything. We'd like to come back when it's ready for tourists. Hopefully things will be better next time around...looking forward to seeing Ramon...
